There are at least three major styles Kobayashi, Shobayashi, Matsubayashi. Kenpo-the Japanese word for the Chinese martial arts. Let me say this I fully believe that the Okinawans did not teach some things to the Japanese. These things are for the most party very high level skills. They modified the stances a bit making them longer and deeper than those most commonly used in Okinawan styles.Anet a8 lcd pinout
If the top Okinawan masters were pitted against the top masters in Japan, it still comes down to training, and luck. I have known many masters in both Japanese and Okinawan Karate. Again it comes down to the individuals, not the styles By the way, While I was in college early 'sa friend brought a Japanese Foreign Exchange student home with him for Christmas. I met with them and we worked out. The Japanese was a first degree black belt in Shotokan. His was about 5' 1" tall. We sparred and he destroyed me, no matter what I did.
At the time I was a brown belt and was considered by many of my peers to be good for a brown belt. I learned a lesson in humility that day Do not concern yourself with this is better than that. Even if it were true, it would still come down to you and how well you are trained.
American Kenpo or Goju Ryu?? Please help!?
It is like buying a camera.Ed Parker is credited with being the creator of modern Kenpo, putting on the biggest tournament in the world for years, the Internationals, teaching movie stars, including Elvis, and all manner of other deeds.
His prowess is quite well known, and his students are legion. Unfortunately, when he first began teaching, while he seemed to demonstrate a talent as a teacher, he was only a brown belt. In those days he was actually teaching the Heian forms from Shotokan karate, this as illustrated by one of his earliest books.
Running out of material to teach his students, he went back to Hawaii and was told to go take a hike, the founder of the system apparently had lost interest in him as a student. Ed then ran into a fellow in San Francisco named Jimmy Woo, whose named might have been Jimmy Wu, who knew tremendous and authentic gung fu, but who spoke almost no English.
Ed brought Jimmy to Los Angeles, where they lived together, and where Jimmy devised the Kenpo forms, the techniques, and so on. Ed took these forms and techniques and began teaching them as his own. To complicate matters further, Ed asked Jimmy to write a book with him on what they were doing, and Jimmy spent his days writing kenpo, teaching Ed and some of his students, all while still being deficient in the English language. This was surprising, because even though Ed was half the team, Jimmy was doing all the work.
Why not my name on book, is what he was supposed to have said. Ed said he would explain, but he had an errand to run, could they take a drive, and Ed would explain on the way.
On Hollywood Blvd, there is an Armenian pastry shop there now, Ed let Jimmy out of the car, and drove off. Jimmy had one single quarter in his pocket, the clothes on his back, and nothing else. He had been teaching, writing, and then, he had been betrayed. Now, is this story true, or is it a pack of lies? If anybody has definite information on this story, I sure would like to know.

Thank you for your article. I have heard some stories as well but have not heard this one before about Ed Parker. It is always sad when a student takes the less desirable path. It is even worse when they turn on other Martial Artists that are trying to help them. Do you have any idea what happened to Jimmy? It was located on Hollywood Blvd. I used to pass by it and look in and wonder about it. It was dark and dingy, had tile floors. I think it is a bakery now.
Can you say commitment? No embalming room, haha! Later, after my father and the others trailed off, due to marriage, family, etc…the new students were ushered in, and Jimmy moved to Winona Blvd. His students built him a huge structure in his backyard, to teach. Please email me your contact info.
Having perused this thread and first noticing the prejudiced, inflammatory and highly suspect initial report which is 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th hand knowledge and not even knowing or verifying the details of Mr. Parker is the bad guy?
Hawaiian Kempo was a traditional Okinawan karate do system brought to Hawaii. He wanted to modernize the system which was, at the time, a traditional rendition of what could never be mistaken for applicable fighting techniques.Ok, so right now I am yellow belt in Ed Parker's American Kenpo but I don't really like the way the do things very much and I don't find the whole ''learn techniques that they attack you with this specific attack and you have to defend yourself this specific way'' effective and sometimes I think that a traditional art would be more interesting for me to study.
I've been considering for a while switching to a Goju ryu dojo that is also around I know there is no better style, but I just want to know what you people have to say so I can decide which one is better for me Oh, just tell me how is a goju ryu class and its techniques and requirements, since I already know the kenpo ones After 5 years, I had the first two belts in 5 different systems.
In hindsight, I wish I would have stayed with Kenpo for 5 years before I branched out to other systems. If you have a bad relationship with your instructor, then by all means, change schools. But otherwise, get a stronger foundation. If you are a yellow belt, then you really don't know anything yet. Martial arts is about perseverance. Kenpo typically takes a lot longer to advance then other systems do, but it's worth the wait.
Update: Oh, just tell me how is a goju ryu class and its techniques and requirements, since I already know the kenpo ones Answer Save. Good luck. Christina Lv 4. Still have questions? Shuri karate is rather different from Naha karate, drawing on different predecessor influences. Shito-ryu can be regarded as a blend of Shuri and Naha traditions as its kata incorporate both Shuri and Naha kata. When it comes to individual karate styles; Shotokan involves long, deep stances and powerful long range techniques. Shito-ryu, on the other hand, uses more upright stances and stresses speed rather than power in its long and middle range techniques.
Wado-ryu too employs shorter, more natural stances and the style is characterised by the emphasis on body shifting to avoid attacks. Kyokushin, an extremely hard style, involves breaking more often than the other styles and full contact, knockdown sparring as a main part of its training. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The history of Goju-ryu is somewhat clouded in mystery due to the lack of documentation regarding the art. Still, it is believed that during the 14th century Chinese Kempo was first introduced to Okinawa. Kempo eventually combined, at least to an extent, with the native martial arts there to form Okinawa-te globally, or Tomari-te, Shuri-te, or Naha-te depending on the area of origin.
It should be noted that inJapan invaded Okinawa, and during this time, Okinawans were banned from carrying weapons or practicing martial arts. As a result, martial arts were practiced underground there for quite some time. Goju-ryu karate was the style of karate that Ralph Macchio practiced under his teacher, Mr.
Miyagi, in the movie, "The Karate Kid," and the Crane Block was spoken of in the movie as an "unstoppable move. Eventually, Higashionna returned to Okinawa in When he came back he began teaching a new martial arts styleone that comprised both his knowledge of the Okinawan styles with the martial arts he learned in China.
What he came out with was Okinawan karate. Miyagi began studying under Hiagashionna at the tender age of When Higashionna died, many of his students continued to train with Miyagi. Miyagi also traveled to China to study martial arts, just as his predecessor did, bringing his knowledge back to Japan where he began to refine the martial arts he and his students practiced. When Shinzato returned home and told Miyagi of this, Miyagi decided to call his style Goju-ryu.
Why I Stopped Practicing My Karate Style. (Maybe YOU Should Too?)
Goju-ryu karate is generally a stand-up style, characterized by both hard closed fist and soft open hand or circular techniques. Many Goju-ryu practitioners feel as if they are martial arts technicians, in that they utilize angles to deflect strikes rather than trying to meet strength with strength.
In addition, Goju-ryu tends to emphasize meeting opponents with the opposite of what they are utilizing. For example, striking the head a hard part of the body with the open hand a soft part of the body or striking the groin soft with a groin kick hard.
Beyond this, Goju-ryu karate is known for teaching breathing techniques to a great extent. It also utilizes some takedowns, throws, and weapons. Interestingly, because of the Japanese suppression that occurred in the s when they invaded, Okinawan martial artists tended to use weapons that were really farm tools such as the Bokken wooden sword and Bo wooden staff so as not to bring attention to the fact that they were practicing martial arts.
The basic goal of Goju-ryu karate is self-defense. It is primarily a stand-up form that teaches practitioners how to block strikes by using angles and then subdue them with hand and leg strikes.
The art also teaches some takedowns, which tend to set up finishing strikes. Robert Rousseau. Facebook Facebook Twitter Twitter.
